The Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Golf Skills Challenge, a competition to find Ireland’s most skilled amateur golfer, is underway with club events taking place up and down the country ahead of the national final in the GUI Academy this September. As the Skills Challenge tests five key skills of golf, we thought we’d have a look at the pros and marvel at some of their skills, starting with a few unconventional tricks.

Shane Lowry

One of our favourite players in the game, the Offaly man is a gent on and off the fairways and he’s pretty handy on a GAA pitch too. His father Brendan was on the 1982 Offaly All-Ireland winning team so we shouldn’t be surprised at all that the Clara man can do this bit of skill, pinging a golf ball off the post from the halfway line.

Padraig Harrington

Another Irish golfer, another cool move. This time it is Padraig Harrington, puling off his party piece, the ‘Happy Gilmore’ drive. Do not try this at home.

Rory McIlroy

While we are on a roll with Irish golfers, here’s Rory McIlroy juggling the golf ball with not one, but two different clubs at a press launch. We couldn’t do this with both feet, never mind two wedges.

Vijay Singh

Don’t play over the water, play across it and put the ball in the hole as well. At Augusta. This is mind-bogglingly good.

Phil Mickelson

Here’s a very slick trick by Lefty that you can use to amuse your friends on the course. Don’t try this in competition though…
