For this to happen in the GAA is just wrong…

A Connemara GAA club have lodged a formal complaint with the Galway County Board after a referee allegedly told them not to speak Irish to their team on the pitch.

Speaking today to RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltacht, it was confirmed by the Galway County Board that an official complaint had been lodged by Na Piarsaigh/Ros Muc GAA Club over the incident at the weekend.

The match in question was a Junior A Football Championship West match between Na Piarsaigh/Ros Muc and Salthill Knocknacarra in Rossaveal on Saturday.

Speaking to the radio, County Board Secretary John Hynes said that a complaint had been made by the club, as well as one of the club officials.

They allege that the referee told them not to talk Irish to their team.

Mr Hynes said that the match would be dealt with through the official complaints system and the matter is being treated very seriously.

The inquiry will be concluded in 10 days.
