Gary Cronin Leaves Republic Of Ireland Assistant Coach Role

Gary Cronin has left his role as assistant coach with the Republic of Ireland women's team, the FAI confirmed on Sunday, just over six months after his appointment. RTÉ Sport reported the departure comes ahead of October's World Cup play-offs.

Why Gary Cronin is leaving

The former Longford Town and Bray Wanderers manager was appointed last January, succeeding Alan Mahon, and was involved in all six of Ireland's World Cup qualifiers, including back-to-back wins over Poland and a memorable victory against the Netherlands in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. While Cronin cited “new opportunities” as his reason for leaving, The42 understands a disconnect had developed in his working relationship with head coach Carla Ward.

“It was an honour to represent my country and work with such a talented and committed group of players and staff,” said Cronin. “As I move on to new opportunities, I'd like to wish the Ireland Women's national team the very best of luck in the upcoming qualifying play-offs – hopefully they can go on to clinch qualification to another World Cup.”

Ward is now seeking her third number two, with the process to appoint a successor already under way. Ireland face Kazakhstan in Round 1 of the play-offs in October. For more, see our Irish football coverage.
