A 47-strong Ireland team has been confirmed for next month’s European Athletics Championships, after Athletics Ireland added a further 14 athletes to the squad. The championships take place in Birmingham from 10-16 August.
Sharlene Mawdsley is named in both the relay and the 400m, though her participation depends on her recovering from the hamstring injury she sustained at the National Championships last weekend. Bori Akinola, who lowered his 100m personal best to 10.19 seconds this season, will make his individual debut, while Ciara Neville also competes over that distance.
Jack Raftery, Sophie Becker and national champion Rachel McCann have all been added for the 400m, with Marcus Lawler going in the 200m. The action gets under way in Birmingham on 10 August. There is plenty more to follow on the team over on our Irish sport coverage.
