The developments leave Infantino increasingly isolated ahead of next year's FIFA Congress.

The Swiss announced on Saturday that plans to sell stakes in a company running Fifa competitions to private investors had been scrapped, following opposition from three continents and a boycott threat from UEFA.

European football's governing body welcomed the U-turn but said it had lost confidence in his leadership, a statement the English FA said had its “full support”.

Both the FA and the Football Association of Wales had previously written letters backing Infantino for re-election. Both have now reversed course, while the FAI rowed in behind Uefa last week, adding an Irish voice to the growing revolt against the Fifa chief.

"The recent failures in good governance, processes, leadership, values, stakeholder management, communications and sound judgement have led us to a position where Mr Infantino has lost the confidence of the FAW to remain at the helm of world football."
