Peter Edwards has immediately retired after the Liverpool youngster made his Wales debut, meaning a £50 bet he placed in 2000 finally came through.

Last night’s game between Wales and Belgium was very, very special indeed for a couple of related Welshmen. For Harry Wilson, a 16-year-old prodigy on Liverpool’s books, it was his senior debut for Wales, making him the youngest ever Welsh international.

For his grandfather, Wilson’s appearance as a sub meant a life-changing amount of money was waiting to be collected in a William Hill betting office in Wrexham. When Wilson was just 18 months old, Edwards went to his local William Hill and put £50 on his grandson to one day play for Wales. The odds given to him by the bookie were 2,500/1.

So, when Wilson ran onto the pitch last night, £125,000 (over €147,000) was his. Edwards was quick to make some big decisions, telling the Guardian: “I retired immediately. I told my manager yesterday that if Harry plays I wouldn’t be coming back.” Class.

Wilson tried to bump up his bet four years ago, when Wilson was signed up by Liverpool, but the bookie refused.

And Edwards has promised to give Wilson a share of the winnings, as he doesn’t make too much at the moment. We suspect that may change soon enough.
