The Internet raised its voice in support of the world number 1…
JOE is fairly certain that when it comes to trophies, Rory McIlroy is much more content to be looking at the Open and PGA Championship titles resting in his trophy cabinet this morning rather than the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
McIlroy had a stellar 2014 and was also a key part of Europe’s Ryder Cup win so naturally Twitter had it’s say on Lewis Hamilton’s win.
Keep and eye out for an unfortunate typo on the BBC’s part.
SPOTY vote breakdown: Hamilton gets 33.8%. Lower % than Murray in 2013 (56%) but higher than Wiggins in 2012 (30%). pic.twitter.com/47upmuUXJ6

Outside of World Cup, my favourite day of live sport this year was @McIlroyRory demolition of Fowler at Gleneagles. Genius at close quarters

@McIlroyRory awards don't define greatness. Good luck for continued success 👍⛳

Obsolutely ridiculous that @McIlroyRory has not won Sports Personality 2014. Huge respect to @LewisHamilton but come on.

.@BBCSPOTY has turned into a complete joke. It's such a great shame. Huge congrats to @LewisHamilton, but he had 1 person to beat all year.

Lot of angry people on my timeline… Unfortunately as long as SPOTY continues to be a public vote then this will continue to happen! #Rory

Rory McIlroy pays the price for those sh*te Santander adverts.

As Rory McIlroy took to the stage, he had his 'right, you fuckers, I'm definitely playing for Ireland in the 2016 Olympics' face on. #SPOTY

Lewis Hamilton winning a personality award, irony is pretty ironic sometimes.

Poor @McIlroyRory. He'll have to console himself in his massive pile of 2014 trophies. http://t.co/rbheopSYF4 #SPOTY pic.twitter.com/qNb2HHbQZ1
