Mick McCarthy was the last man to lead Ireland to a major tournament and the former Wolves boss believes James McClean should be on the plane to Polkraine.

We’ve missed Mick McCarthy. So have Wolves by the looks of it but that’s a different story. Always reliable for a decent quote and a seemingly endless font of hilarious YouTube clips (see below), the game is a duller place with Mick in the stands rather than the dugout.

However Mick has been keeping an eye on what is going on and when asked about James McClean in today’s Irish Daily Star, the former Sunderland boss was very clear about the current Sunderland winger.

“He is big, powerful and he looks like he hasn’t got any worries about who he is playing against. He has just come and taken it by storm.

“If you want somebody like that in the European Championships, I think he would just go there and do exactly the same.”

So do we Mick, maybe you could give Trap a call for us? Anyway, Mick wasn’t done there.

“He is a breath of fresh air. He is a fabulous player. He’s got a bit of everything. He’s about 6‘2”, he looks tough and nothing seems to faze him. And he puts great crosses in. He’s a fantastic player and from what I hear he is a good lad.”

Effusive praise indeed from Mick, who also revealed that Wolves had scouted him when the winger was at Derry City. What the Molineux faithful would do to have McClean in their side at the moment.

Anyway, for those of you like us who are missing Mick, here’s two of his finest YouTube clips.
