Ireland boxing coach John Conlan has some very frank words for Michael O’Reilly

He has brought a “terrible thing” to Irish boxing.

Michael Conlan’s impressive victory over Armenia’s Aram Avagyan has given the Irish boxing team a much needed moral boost after a trying week in Rio. Michael’s father, Irish boxing coach John Conlan, has said that Michael O’Reilly’s failed drug test and subsequent expulsion from the Olympics has brought a “terrible thing” to Irish boxing.

Speaking with RTÉ Sport, Conlan says that O’Reilly “embarrassed Irish boxing and brought a terrible thing to Irish boxing. We are very strict on anti-doping. We bring them (the boxers]) to seminars and educate them constantly. We have zero tolerance. We were always ahead of everyone else.”

After testing positive for a banned substance, O’Reilly admitted that he unintentionally took a supplement which contained a banned substance. Conlan also stated that O’Reilly spent 8 weeks away from the rest of the training camp in the build up to the Olympics.

“Michael O’Reilly hadn’t been with us for eight weeks. We met him at the airport. And it was a big big shock to the team.”
