All-rounder Mooney, who scored the winning runs in Ireland’s historic win over England at the 2011 Cricket World Cup, has deleted the message in which he said he hoped Margaret Thatcher’s death had been “slow and painful”.

He has apologised for his comments, which he has described as “crass, insensitive and and offensive.”

“Cricket Ireland have asked the player to remove the comments which have caused offence, and will consider appropriate disciplinary action in due course,” it said in a statement.

Her death has divided opinions and re-ignited bitterness towards her regime and policies while in power, with her state funeral fixed for next Wednesday.
