Irish Soccer's Most Memorable Moments, No 12: Aldo and Big Jack get a little blue
At number 12, we look back to John Aldridge and Jack Charlton getting rowdy.
A bumbling FIFA official was the cause of this blow-up...I know…an inept soccer official, that’s a rarity.
Ireland were 2-0 down and melting in the heat of the Citrus Bowl in California when Big Jack tried to make a substitution, unfortunately a meddlesome FIFA official prevented this going ahead.
John and Jack blew their Scouse and Geordie tops respectively at the injustice of it, dropping the “f” bomb on more than one occasion.
Jack was banned for the next match, but Aldo did get on the pitch and that substitution proved inspired as his goal from a McAteer cross ensured that Ireland finished second in the group and qualified for the next round, despite the 2-1 loss.
The FIFA official in the yellow hat was immortalized in the below song.
We’re counting down the days to Ireland’s Euro 2012 opener against Croatia. Join us every day in the build-up to the tournament for another classic Irish soccer memory.
