Irish Soccer’s Most Memorable Moments, No 12: Sheedy scores, England s**t themselves
At number 11, we look back to Italia 1990 and yet again we are the bane of England’s existence.
The first match of our first ever World Cup and again we were up against ‘auld enemy who went on to reach the semi-finals of the tournament – their best performance since 1966.
England took the lead through their golden boy and future crisp peddler Gary Lineker, step forward Kevin Sheedy. The Everton legend possessed a powerful shot and rifled the ball into the back of Peter Shilton’s net.
Let’s consider Sheedy for a moment, he was Welsh-born of Clare stock and is often under-appreciated. He played in all three of Ireland’s Euro ’88 games, bagged one of our penalties against Romania in 1990 and was such a threat to the Italians in the quarter -finals of that tournament that the Azzurri had to spring the legendary Giuseppe Bergomi, veteran of four World Cups to ma-mark him.
Gary Lineker poo’d his shorts in this match, he says he was sick. We reckon he was frightened of Ireland’s left-wing Dynamo.
