Number 9 in our most memorable moments and today we go back to our last European Championships and a match against USSR.

Number 9 in our most memorable moments and today we go back to our last European Championships and a match against USSR.

Ronnie Whelan was the Liverpool captain in 1988 when Ireland reached their first European Championships. The Championships were a success with Ireland beating England and then drawing their next match to the USSR.

Ireland disobeyed big Jack’s orders and played a bit of football against the mighty Soviets and when Mick McCarthy launched the ball into the box and Whelan scored a wonderful goal past the superlative Dasayev in goals.

Some later said it came off his shin, we would like to tell those people to stop being buzzkills.

Sadly Ireland lost in their next match to eventual winners Holland, USSR were the eventual runners-up.

Ronnie Whelan finished up as one of the most successful Liverpool players of all-time, but this was undoubtedly his finest moments in a green jersey.

We’re counting down the days to Ireland’s Euro 2012 opener against Croatia. Join us every day in the build-up to the tournament for another classic Irish soccer memory.
