Irish woman records second-best marathon time by an Irish female athlete
What an achievement.
Sinead Diver's 2:25:19 run is the second fastest ever by an Irish-born female athlete, and smashed the record for the Medibank Melbourne Marathon.
Diver has been based in Australia for over 15 years, but originally hails from Belmullet in Co. Mayo. Diver represents Australia when she runs competitively.
Such was the emphatic nature of her performance, she picked up an additional $20,000 on top of the $20,000 first place prize. Media coverage has also focused on the fact that Diver is 41, making her incredible achievement all the more impressive.
According to the website Fast Running, Diver said: “Today was the best marathon experience I’ve ever had. It’s really special to get a PB in my hometown. Finishing in the G, with all my family and friends cheering me on was so emotional.”
Her spectacular finishing time took no less than six minutes off her previous personal best.
