James McClean has paid tribute to the wonderful Irish fans in France

Paul Moore

He’s a patriot.

In a tournament that provided some brilliant memories, James McClean’s rampaging performance against Italy was arguably one of the best. There were times when the West Brom winger seemed like he was unplayable as he twisted, turned and tied the Azzuri defenders in knots.

The former Derry City man has made no secret that he absolutely loves playing for his country, he said that he was driven by the “love for this country, for those fans, for ourselves and for our families” in the wake of the historic 1-0 win over the Italians, and he has just expressed his gratitude to the fans on social media for their brilliant contribution to the boys in green.

With senior players expected to retire from international duty in the aftermath of Euro 2016, it’s very likely that McClean will be one of the more experienced members of the squad when Ireland begin their campaign to reach  World Cup 2018.

His passion, dedication and skill will undoubtedly be needed by Martin O’Neill and McClean is more than ready to pull on that green jersey once again.
