It’s something all rugby players from this part of the world dream of and for four Irish players today, the dream of a Lions Test starting shirt came true.
Getting a Lions shirt is a great honour for any player, but getting one for a Test is even more special. Today, four Irish men were recipients of that famous red shirt, and the Lions had legend Ian McGeechan on hand to distribute the shirts today. Geech coached two winning Lions tours (1989 and 1997) so it was great to see him on hand to pass on a word or two of wisdom.
For Brian O’Driscoll, Jamie Heaslip and Paul O’Connell this was a ceremony they had been through before on various tours over the years but for Jonny Sexton it was his first.
Let’s hope a bit of Geech’s magic has rubbed off on the shirts…
