Manchester United deny they have met Pep Guardiola about manager’s job

Tony Cuddihy

Manchester United say they have not met Pep Guardiola to discuss taking over from Louis van Gaal in the summer.

Reports in France from both France Football and L’Equipe stated that Guardiola had spoken with officials from Old Trafford last week in Paris, but United have denied those reports.

Guardiola will leave Munich in the summer and has already announced his intention to manage in England.

Manchester City are favourites to land the former Barcelona boss, although Chelsea and United are also strongly linked with the Spaniard.

The future of van Gaal has been in doubt for a number of months, given United’s conservative style of play and the fact that they currently lie fifth in the Premier League table, two points behind Tottenham.

Guardiola recently apologised for any pressure he had put on managers in the Premier League with the timing of his announcement.

“It was not my intention to offend anybody,” he said. “Normally in my career as a trainer and as a player, I respect my colleagues a lot.”
