There was plenty to smile about.
Michael D. Higgins was in attendance last night for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifier match between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, in Tallaght Stadium.
The women’s team put in a performance that gave the fans plenty to cheer, seeing off our neighbours with an emphatic 4-0 victory.
Two goals apiece from Katie McCabe and Leanne Kiernan overpowered the Northern Ireland team and bagged an impressive win in the final game of qualification.
Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be enough to seal qualification for next year’s World Cup, but it was a performance that showed plenty of positive signs for the future.
It also looked like the players were in flying form after the win as they celebrated with President Higgins, himself a massive fan of football.
The FAI shared a video of Higgins celebrating with the team and everybody looks only delighted.
Fantastic to see @PresidentIRL congratulate the #IRLWNT🇮🇪 after their 4-0 win over @NorthernIreland! 👏🏻
It’s fair to say the players were absolutely delighted! 🙌🏻#COYGIG pic.twitter.com/QdJlyTKTuX
