Marion Bartoli might have won a Wimbledon title yesterday, but that didn’t stop John Inverdale having a go at her looks

Marion Bartoli claimed her first Wimbledon title with a fantastic performance against Sabine Lisicki yesterday, but BBC commentator John Inverdale was not hugely complimentary to the newly crowned champion.

Inverdale was speaking on the radio before she took on Lisicki in the final yesterday, and they were talking about her dogged style and how she expends a serious amount of energy on court when he stated that her father probably knew she “was never going to be a looker”

In his defence, he was possibly trying to point out that she’s not as tall or athletic looking as some of the others on the tour and she would have to compensate for that with hard work, but he made a very poor choice of words. The BBC has since apologised for the comment.
