One to watch: Sebastian Fromm

So you heard about the German international centre who plays for Clongowes, right?

Rugby is not a sport you immediately associate with Germany but one Clongowes youngster may be about to change that. Sebastian Fromm is captain of the Clane school’s Senior Cup team and we wouldn’t bet against him lifting the big one next month.

Fromm plays at centre and he was part of the Clongowes side that lost last year’s final to St Michael’s College 17-10. Five other members of that squad return but Fromm, as captain and one of their biggest scoring treats, is the most important.

In their one outing to date in the Cup this year Clongowes battered St Gerard’s 30-6, with Fromm scoring the fourth try of the game.

As we said at the top, Fromm is a German international, at Under 18 level, and the country is slowly making progress through the ranking levels of the sport. They are currently 29th in the IRB’s list and with 20 going to each World Cup, they are close enough to dream about making it one day, perhaps during Fromm’s career.

But back to more recent matters. Clongowes have appeared in the last three Senior Cup finals, so they clearly have a winning mentality. Last year’s defeat denied them what would have been a sensational hat-trick.

As they look to go one better this year, their driving force will be Fromm. He may well be the man in possession of the most prized cup in Leinster school’s rugby come March 18.
