The Lions have just crushed Australia in the third and final test in Sydney and Jonathan Sexton’s try proved crucial when the game was still in the melting pot. Did it mean a lot? Did it ever…

The Irish out-half, like so many of his team-mates in red, delivered when it mattered most as the Lions enjoyed a 41-16 victory over the Wallabies and put to bed all the controversial selection issues that had dogged the build-up coming into today’s game, including the omission of Brian O’Driscoll, who looked as happy as the rest of the Lions squad from his vantage point on the touchline.

Sexton scored a crucial try when the game was still in the balance early in the second half and even a half-hearted shove from Kurtley Beale behind the posts wasn’t going to stop him from enjoying it.

After that, the Lions rammed home their advantage with further tries from George North and Jamie Roberts, while Player of the Series Leigh Halfpenny was outstanding once again.

Hearty congratulations to Warren Gatland and his management team, to Sean O’Brien, Jonathan Sexton, Tommy Bowe, Conor Murray, Brian O’Driscoll, Jamie Heaslip, Paul O’Connell, Simon Zebo, Rory Best, Cian Healy, Tom Court and to all the Lions squad on a magnificent victory.

Sydney will be hit and hit hard tonight.
