Pic: The brilliant Katie Walsh portrait that won a major UK photo competition

Spencer Murphy captured the jockey after a race, and scooped the National Portrait Gallery’s Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize.

We know that being a National Hunt jockey is a tough gig and that fact is clearly etched on the face of Katie Walsh in this fantastic snap.

Taken by Spencer Murphy as part of Channel 4’s The Original Extreme Sport campaign, Murphy caught up with Walsh after a race at Kempton.

On the Creative Review site, Murphy explains how he got the shot and its meaning.

“I set up at the side of the racecourse and pulled in the jockeys as they finished their races,” Murphy says. “I was keen to include Katie. I wanted to show both her femininity and the toughness of spirit she requires to compete against the best riders in one of the most demanding disciplines in horse racing.”

Wearing the colours of Seabass, the picture is just great and earned Murphy a very handy £12,000 too.
