Pic: The Pope is a GAA fan and here’s the wonderful proof

Any chance of seeing him on the terraces during the Championship?

Any chance of seeing him on the terraces during the Championship?

On the 80th birthday of Jack Charlton, this JOE remembers one of the most famous off-the-field moments during Ireland’s Italia 90 campaign, the sight of the players meeting The Pope in the Vatican.

It should also be known that a fair few of the lads fell asleep during the ceremony because it was so bloody boring but it was still a fairly iconic image.

While the ‘holy goalie’ John Paul II was a firm fan of soccer, it seems that Pope Francis might be converted to the GAA after we received these wonderful snaps.

JOE reader Tiernan Mc Guckin informs us that a man named Chris Taggart from Castlederg in Tyrone has created a GAA page that’s based out of Rome.

Chris has since moved to Hong Kong but fellow Irishman Cormac McLaughlin has taken up the reigns of Rome’s most prominent GAA website and he’s landed a big coup.

We can all agree that Chris is doing the lords work here by promoting the game that we love so much.

Take a look.
