The Down native didn’t quite do enough to retain his title but he still rode a hell of a race nonetheless.

Irvine claimed the silver medal in the scratch race after finishing behind Ivan Kovalev of Russia in a sprint finish but will have little time to reflect on what was a significant achievement as he is back on the track competing in the points race later today.

Irvine also finished 12th in the individual pursuit, a race in which Irish teenager Ryan Mullen came in in fourth place in what is his first World Championships.

The performance offered the latest glimpse of Mullen’s huge potential and his name is one that you’ll be hearing plenty in the future if he can build on what he’s achieved in the sport to date.
