Reeling in Euro 2016 – When the Irish fans took over France in June

Paul Moore

This was a special month. Prepare to burst with pride.

So much has happened in Irish society during 2016 that it’s easy to forget some of the biggest events and stories from the past 12 months.

Unlike other months, June was about one thing only.

10) Irish fan moved to tears after fellow supporters replace his lost match ticket

This is what it means.

One Irish fan, who we only know as Jay, almost missed his chance to be at Ireland’s opening game in Paris as he lost his match ticket before entering the ground and was understandably quite distressed about doing so.

A group of Irish fans from Derry, including Brian Kerrigan, came across Jay outside the stadium and in an incredibly sound gesture, chipped in and bought him a ticket.

9) Gianluigi Buffon was happy for Ireland after their 1-0 win over Italy

8) Iceland score as Steve McClaren tells Sky that England have nothing to worry about

If we could choose one clip to perfectly summarise England’s abysmal Euro 2016 performance, it would be this piece of TV gold.

7) Loads of Irish fans sing lullabies to a French baby on a Bordeaux train

6) Irish fan’s fantastic gesture to Swedish supporter will renew your faith in humanity

Carmel Mc Connellogue from Derry found a ticket for the Ireland v Sweden on the ground. Carmel picked up the ticket and looked around for the owner but there was none to be found. Refusing to be deterred in her quest to find the rightful owner, she continued on her path while keeping an eye out for the potential owners.

Five minutes later, she met a Swedish fan who looked absolutely distraught about something, not for much longer though.

In her own words: “It was an awesome feeling for both me and him as we’d travelled over for the game and got tickets. To not get to game, you’d be so disappointed.”

The Swedish fan was so happy to be reunited with his ticket that he took a celebratory snap with Carmel.

5) Irish and Croatian fans were having great craic together

This happened the day after those English and Russian hooligans clashed in Marseille.

This is what being a true football supporter is about. Passion, friendship and fun.

4) Ireland fans and Sweden fans join forces to sing ABBA on the streets of Paris

“See that girl, watch that scene, diggin’ the Boys in Green.” Wonderful.

3) Irish fans serenade unsuspecting nun with ‘Our Father’ chant on a train in France

Well holy God.
