The No 10 now faces a race against time to be fit for the Autumn internationals against South Africa, Georgia and Australia.

Today’s Irish Examiner is reporting that Johnny Sexton faces two months on the sidelines after shipping a big hit in Top 14 action on Saturday night.

Playing for his club Racing Metro, Sexton was hit late by Toulon’s Craig Burden early in the game that Racing would go on to win 17-10. Sexton stayed on the field, kicking two conversions, but he did leave the game before the end.

Burden was yellow carded for the hit but the impact on Sexton was far worse, who looks set to now miss the kick off of the European Cup, and the timeline outlined in the paper means the 29-year-old will be struggling to be fit in time for Ireland’s first game of the season, on November 8 against South Africa.

The incident can be seen around the 50 second mark in the video highlights below in which Sexton appears to get struck by Burden’s forearm in the face.
