Leinster confirm Matt O’Connor is leaving the province

The Australian has left the Irish province.

Leinster have sacked their head coach Matt O’Connor with immediate effect according to reports this morning.

The Sunday Independent’s Brendan Fanning broke the story:

O’Connor led Leinster to a European Cup semi final and 5th place in the Guinness PRO12 this season. The province are yet to comment on the story.

****UPDATE****

Leinster released a statement a short time ago confirming the news.

“Leinster Rugby have this morning announced that Head Coach Matt O’Connor will depart the province at the end of the season by mutual agreement. 

The announcement was made by Leinster Rugby CEO Mick Dawson at their Head Office in UCD following a meeting of the Professional Games Board.”

Leo Cullen, Leinster’s forwards coach, will take over all team matters on an interim basis until a replacement had been found and that a search for a replacement was underway.
