The 37 year-old has not been in competitive action since withdrawing from the 2012/13 season back in November citing ‘personal reasons’ for his decision to take a break.

His sabbatical is over and the bad news for those with their eyes on the biggest title of them all at the Crucible, the Rocket will be back to defend the title he won last year with an 18-11 victory over Ali Carter, the second time he has beaten his opponent on the biggest stage.

His ranking has dropped to 24th, but as defending champion, will be the top seed for the event and is looking forward to getting back to the table.

“I got a bit bored,” said O’Sullivan. “I needed a rest and I thought it was time to get back to what I have done for a lot of my life.”

“I knew I couldn’t take too much time out. It was always in the back of my mind that I had to come back and come back with a clear head after sorting a few things out,” he added.

The game is all the better for his return.
