RTÉ sub-license the rights to almost half of the 2016 European Championships to TV3

This is the first agreement of its kind.

RTÉ have agreed to sub-license the rights to show 22 of the games from this summer’s 2016 European Championships to TV3 in an unprecedented agreement between the two broadcasters.

While RTÉ will retain the rights for all of Ireland’s games and have first-choice of matches in the knockout stages, both broadcasters will share the rights to the tournament’s final.

Some of the matches will also be shown on RTÉ2, including three of Wales’ games, two of Northern Ireland’s games and one England match.

RTÉ2 will also have five round-of-16 games, two quarter-finals and both semi-finals – as well as shared coverage of the final.

Ryle Nugent, Group Head of RTÉ Sport, has said that because of the many sporting events that need to be broadcast this summer – an agreement with TV3 is the best way to ensure that Irish audiences will have a chance to see all of the games.
