Republic of Ireland international Sammie Szmodics has rejoined EFL Championship side Derby County on a season-long loan, The42 reports.
The Ipswich Town forward had not featured for the Tractor Boys since head coach Kieran McKenna sidelined him in February, citing a “dressing room culture” issue. Despite a change of manager at Ipswich, Szmodics will again spend the campaign at Derby, where he impressed on loan during the second half of last season.
The move reunites the 30-year-old with Derby manager John Eustace, the former Republic of Ireland assistant coach under whom Szmodics enjoyed his most prolific season. The pair worked together at Blackburn Rovers, where the striker scored 27 goals to claim the 2023/24 Championship Golden Boot.
Under Eustace at Derby last season, Szmodics scored three goals in 13 appearances as the club finished eighth, four points off the play-off places, RTÉ Sport notes.
The 12-cap international’s most recent Ireland appearance came in the World Cup play-off defeat to Czechia. He had started the group opener against Hungary but missed the remainder of the campaign due to injury, and the loan return offers the forward regular game time as he looks to force his way back into the Republic of Ireland reckoning.
