Séamus Power faces a battle to keep his PGA Tour season alive after the Waterford man carded a two-under 68 to sit seven shots off the lead following the opening round of the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina.
As The42 reported, Séamus Power heads into Friday needing a big round to climb the FedExCup standings.
The Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club is the final event of the PGA Tour regular season, with the last FedExCup play-off places up for grabs.
The top 70 in the standings advance to the $20 million (€17.33 million) FedEx St Jude Championship, and Power, currently just outside the top 50, needs to finish solo second at worst to be certain of his spot.
Having started on the 10th, he mixed a pair of birdies with bogeys on the 15th and 16th before responding with birdies at the 17th, the first and the sixth.
At the top of the leaderboard, American Beau Hossler set the pace with a nine-under-par 61, one clear of Sahith Theegala and Ben James on eight under, RTÉ Sport noted.
It has been a busy summer for Irish sport more widely, with other Irish athletes making their mark on the world stage keeping the tricolour to the fore.
Play was suspended late in the day because of bad weather, with 12 players still out on the course.
The Waterford man will resume his second round knowing that a strong Friday is essential if he is to book his place in the play-offs.
