Sheffield half-marathon cancelled because organisers didn’t have enough water for the runners

5,000 of the 6,000 participants decided to run the race anyway.

A half marathon in Sheffield had to be cancelled this morning due to ‘insufficient water supplies,’ even though more than 6,000 people had shown up to take part.

Amid chaotic scenes, 5,000 people chose to run the race anyway despite the fact that local police tried to set up road blocks to dissuade people from participating.

BBC reporter Jenny Cook said:

“There was not a great deal of communication with the runners but it was then decided that the race would be cancelled.

“This information filtered through and the runners, well, they decided to run anyway. The roadblocks were in place; the police were very concerned about people’s safety but approximately 5,000 people left the start line for an unofficial Sheffield Half Marathon.”
