Fans going to watch Dan Carter to play will have to have their wits about them to watch out for flying missiles into the crowd.

What started as a token gesture on international duty when the out-half would throw his kicking to on looking kids has developed quickly this season into the Kiwi throwing every single specially-made tee into the crowd after each shot at goals.

So far this season in Super Rugby Carter has thrown more than 200 tees into the crowd and he says it is to give a little something back to the fans.

“I have huge respect for people who make an effort to come to the games, so if there’s something I can do by giving out a tee here and there, then I’m only too happy,” he told 3 News in New Zealand.

“When I’m over on an end-of-year tour, I tend to throw a few tees after training to kids. So I came up with the idea that I should start throwing them into the crowd after each kick, and it’s something that I’ve done this year.”

The out-half averages between 12-15 kicks a game so fans will get plenty of opportunities for their own bit of memorabilia, though it does mean that supporters will have to be vigilant as a result of Carter’s generosity.

“I did meet one guy after the game in the weekend and it teed him in the head.

“He was looking in the other direction and the next thing I know I threw the tee and it hit him square in the head. So I might have to be a bit more careful when I’m throwing the tees in to the crowd in the future.”

No doubt he was happy to take the hit for his own personal memento.
