The GAA-mmys: JOE’s weekly Championship awards (Week 13)

Alan Loughnane

Forget the All-Stars, these are the awards that GAA players really want to win.

The Maurice Fitz award for the score with the most outrageous curl of the week

A couple of weeks back, Austin Gleeson got the gong for this outrageous sideline, and this week he almost made the cut with another one, but he didn’t quite make it.

This weeks award goes to mayo’s Lee Keegan who scored a beautiful outside of the boot effort against Donegal on Saturday.

There was so much curl on that shot it makes other curly shots look… not curly.

The ‘business at the back and sides, party up front’ championship haircut of the week award

There was only going to be one winner here especially after he was so badly injured when Darren Hughes laid a hand on it.

We wish Tiernan McCann a speedy and full recovery from his injury…

The GAA shtyle statement of the week

Ken McGrath wins our shtyle statement of the week. In a time where complimentary suits and shout outs to the providers is commonplace in GAA punditry, Ken McGrath is the outlier.

Ken’s sarcastic Tweet below absolutely made our day…

The ‘did he get that from the soccer?’ showboat of the week

Ok this isn’t exactly a showboat, but did anybody else catch this smooth customer in the crowd yesterday?

What a man…

Sign that maybe the GAA isn’t getting soft at all award

This award is usually for signs that the game isn’t getting soft, but it wouldn’t be right to ignore that softest bit of play to ever earn a red card on the GAA pitch…

This just doesn’t sit right with us.

Only in the GAA moment of the week

Not only was this a great catch by Waterford’s Austin Gleeson, it is the reaction to the man in the background that make us love this clip.

The passion shown by the maor foirne/uisce is something special and sums up all that is great about the GAA.

JOE’s Guaranteed Irish Sports’ Star of the Week Award, a tribute to the tradition of incredibly long names for award titles in the GAA

We’re going to give it to Richie Hogan who played an outstanding game for the Cats as they continue their march towards another All-Ireland final and possible title.

He played with pain-killing injections in his back and some very blistery feet which look as if he was walking on hot coals.

Amazing stuff…
