Many of you will have noticed that the Irish fans have been absolutely adored by the French public during our stay at Euro 2016. As this magnificent open letter says “even defeated, you’re in good spirits. I love you, the Irish, and I think I am telling the truth when I say the whole France that has fallen under your charm” and we’ve just been given further proof of that.

We’ve partied with the French police, made friends with people from different countries, sang lullabies to babies , carried French people over our shoulders through the streets and even rocked the boat on the streets of Paris. Basically, we’re all sound.

Antoine Griezmann’s brace may have ended Ireland’s chances of any further success in the competition but off the field, Ireland’s football fans are to receive a prestigious award from the mayor of Paris for their “exemplary sportsmanship”

Mayor Anne Hidalgo said: “these supporters have been exemplary in their sportsmanship” while creating a special “atmosphere” since the beginning of Euros. Hidalgo told reporters that she will present the Irish fans with the City of Paris medal, and that she has informed President Michael D Higgins of the decision.

Massive credit goes to every Irish fan that acted as a perfect ambassador for our country.
