There’s finally going to be an in-depth documentary about Diego Maradona’s life

Maradona documentary

God and devil. Saint and sinner. This should be something special.

This week has been a very good one for fans of sports documentaries because after ESPN and Netflix announced their 10-part series on the life of Michael Jordan, Amazon have revealed that they’re also working on projects about the All Blacks and Manchester City.

On that note, it’s arguable that no other footballer in the history of the sport has divided opinion quite like Diego Maradona.

In terms of natural ability and skill, the Argentinian icon was a God among men. Simply put, he could do things with a football that very few players would even dream of. Despite retiring decades ago, Maradona will always command the status of a deity on the streets of Buenos Aires after inspiring Argentina to the 1986 World Cup. There’s also the small matter of *that* match against England to discuss.

Away from the pitch, he’s also one of the most controversial footballers in the history of the game with his cocaine addiction, alcohol abuse and political views all making the headlines.

Just take a look at this quite from former teammate, Jorge Valdano. He said: “He (Maradona) is someone many people want to emulate, a controversial figure, loved, hated, who stirs great upheaval, especially in Argentina. Stressing his personal life is a mistake. Maradona has no peers inside the pitch, but he has turned his life into a show, and is now living a personal ordeal that should not be imitated.”

The new documentary promises to bring audiences on the journey of the former player’s early life and across his prolific career, spanning from his home country of Argentina to Spain and Italy. We will also get a look at how he inspired Argentina to win the ’86 World Cup in Mexico.

“The story will feature an unprecedented look at Maradona, not only as a champion but also as a man.  Together with Amazon Prime Video, Dhana Media and Raze we are diving deep into the essence of the story and working on all of its aspects to bring it to a global audience,” said Francisco Cordero, Co-Founder and CEO, BTF Media.

Hell, if it’s half as interesting as El Diego: The Autobiography of the World’s Greatest Footballer, we’re in for a real treat.
