This teenager from Tralee could be Ireland’s first NBA superstar

Cian Sullivan has a massive opportunity

Cian Sullivan from Kerry has been offered a scholarship at one of the biggest basketball colleges in the United States.

The 19-year-old from Tralee stands at a massive 7ft tall, and will sign a letter-of-intent to play at LaSalle University.

He committed to the college while on a visit to the school’s Philadelphia campus last week, according to a report from Tralee Today.

Cian – who is currently at the St. Andrews prep school in Rhode Island, where he has been since September – will be only the seventh Irishman in history to get a scholarship to play basketball in the United States and was offered the chance to ‘redshirt’ for next season before playing for four years in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

‘Redshirting’ delays or suspends an athlete’s participation in order to develop skills and lengthen his period of eligibility.

“Cian is going to be on the Mike Hart diet this year and try to gain about 20 pounds,” St. Andrews coach Hart told the Providence Journal. “He likes the weight room and is getting stronger and in two years I can see him being 230 pounds. He loves the game and is willing to work hard.”

St. Andrews is the ideal spot for Cian before he makes the move to LaSalle – current NBA star and former NBA Rookie of the Year winner Micheal Carter Williams is a former alumnus.
