Those drinks are well earned.
The common perception is that there’s nothing worse than finishing fourth in any Olympic event, but the scenes of happiness and pride on the faces of Thomas Barr and his parents were an indication that the Waterford hurdler knows that there’s more to give.
Barr captured the nation’s heart with his stunning performances in Rio and these culminated in a fourth placed finish at the final of the men’s 400m hurdles. In doing so, Barr has set a new Irish record of 47.97 seconds.
Five-hundredths of a second was the margin that he missed out on Olympic bronze but he’s already said that his focus has turned towards Tokyo in four years time.
It’s fair to say that Barr has been the breakout star of this country’s track and field competitors, but before he goes back to the track to continue his training, a few well earned drinks are in order.
Fair play Thomas, we’re all proud of you.
I'd love to reply to everyone individually but that would eat into valuable 'celebrating' time 🍻🍻. Cheers lads #imstillirishafterall

The Waterford hurdler also took to Instagram to pay tribute to the team that’s around him in Rio.
