Video: Benny Coulter’s retirement is an excuse to relive a ridiculous goal he scored in the 1998 Down under-16 county final

What a player.

What a player.

It’s been quite a week for GAA retirements and another legend bade farewell today as Down’s Benny Coulter announced his retirement from inter-county football.

Coulter has represented the Mourne men with distinction for a remarkable 15 seasons and today released a lengthy statement (you can read it in full here) detailing his decision and declaring his intention to carry on playing for his club, Mayobridge for the foreseeable future.

Easily one of the best forwards of the modern era, Coulter provided supporters of Down and of Gaelic Football with many memorable moments over the years, but we’ve decided to revisit a moment from his underage career, when he scored a frankly ridiculous solo goal for Mayobridge in the Down under-16 county final.

Some underage stars don’t fulfil their potential and fail to live up to the hype but that could never be said of Coulter, whose presence on the inter-county scene will be sorely missed.

Congratulations on a brilliant career Benny and all the best in your retirement.
