Laughing at someone for falling on their arse seems just a tad silly, but try to stay straight-faced after watching Samit Patel do just that for Nottinghamshire against Derbyshire a couple of days ago.
Poor Patel was trying to return to the stump after deciding to turn back halfway through a run on Thursday but lived to regret the decision almost immediately when his feet went from under him, he ended up on his arse and Derbyshire’s Tom Poynton was able to ensure his dismissal while he was still on the ground.
The key to the comedy here is that it wasn’t just any run-of-the-mill slip but it was as if he had stumbled upon a loose banana skin, but perhaps the best part of the video above – apart from the country and western soundtrack, of course – is Patel’s immediate acceptance of his fate.
It’s as if he’s saying: “I’m not going to get back to the stump in time so why bother getting up off my arse in the first place.”
Brilliant.
