VIDEO: Dana White says McGregor was obsessed with a rematch against Diaz

Paul Moore

It’s on.

If you wanted to know what was going through Conor McGregor’s mind after his defeat to Nate Diaz at UFC 196 then there’s no need to wonder anymore, it was payback. Pure and simple.

With a rematch between Nate Diaz and The Notorious scheduled for UFC 200, Dana White was speaking with SportsCenter and revealed that not even John Kavanagh could convince McGregor to return to the featherweight division and defend his title. His mind was squarely set on Diaz.

White says that McGregor’s refusal to run away from a fight throughout his career was a key factor in setting up the rematch. “Conor McGregor is a guy who has had fights fall out seven days before he’s supposed to defend his title and he steps up and he takes on all comers. The guy fights anybody, anywhere, anytime. He’s stepped up late notice and done these things. He wants this Nate Diaz fight, we’ll give it to him. We’ll make Frankie and Jose the interim title. Whoever wins that fight will then fight Conor McGregor for the true 145-pound title”, White says.

There you have it, win, lose or draw, McGregor will return to the featherweight division but here’s hoping that he can take care of Diaz before that.

Have a listen.
