Video: Did Andy Townsend shout ‘Get In’ during a Marseille attack against Arsenal this evening?

It’s hard to make out for certain, but we’re pretty sure he did.

It’s hard to make out for certain, but we’re pretty sure he did.

Andy Townsend’s commentary has been criticised for a number of reasons over the years – bland, uninformative and stating the bleedin’ obvious come to mind – but he gave his critics further ammunition with a blatant display of bias during Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Marseille this evening.

With Arsenal as good as home and hosed holding a two-goal lead with a little under 15 minutes on the clock, Townsend could quite clearly be heard to say ‘Get In’ when Florian Thauvin’s effort was pushed around the post by Wojciech Szczesny.

Commentators and analysts have made far worse gaffes over the years and Townsend could claim that he only wanted the French outfit to make a game of it for the last few minutes, but this episode certainly won’t have done much to endear him to Arsenal fans.

Some might say that he doesn’t endear himself to football fans in general with his current standard of commentary, of course, but we would never be that cruel to a former Irish captain and the man responsible for one of the most trend-setting haircuts in professional football in the mid 90s.
