Not that this fight needs any build-up to get us excited…
UFC 179 takes place this weekend in Brazil and is headlined by a featherweight title bout between champion Jose Aldo (24-1) and #1 contender Chad Mendes (16-1).
The pair met in January 2012 at UFC 142 with Aldo winning the fight by knockout via a knee to the head. Mendes has been waiting a long time for his chance to avenge that loss and he will finally get his opportunity this weekend.
There is Irish interest in the fight with Conor McGregor waiting in the wings for a possible title shot against the winner of the bout. If Aldo wins, it seems very likely that McGregor will get to face the Brazilian as the champion has defeated almost everybody worthy in the featherweight division.
A Mendes victory would complicate things slightly, but due to a recent war of words between Mendes and McGregor, a match-up between the pair is a distinct possibility.
