Irish cycling fans are just as crazy as their rugby or football counterparts…

There was some pretty stiff competition around yesterday but the best sporting event to be at surely had to be the Tour de France. The double ascent of the famed, and feared, Alpe d’Huez was torture for the riders and viewing gold for the fans at home and on the mountain.

It was estimated that 500,000 people crammed onto the stepped incline to watch but the spot to be was Corner 10, now dubbed ‘Irish Corner’. Thousands of Irish fans gathered there to cheer on Nicolas Roche and Dan Martin, as well as to enjoy a magical day on the Tour.

As we brought you yesterday, they covered the place in Irish flags and anything green and even managed to give Mayo for Sam an airing worldwide.

But they also took time to belt out a rendition of ‘The Fields of Athenry’. Fair play lads, we’ll move heaven and earth to make sure we’re there next year.

And give the lads at @IrishCorner10 a follow on Twitter to keep up to date with all their antics…
