Video: Fernando Torres won’t have been too pleased with Jose Mourinho’s press conference last night

Mourinho didn’t mention Torres by name but it doesn’t take a genius to work out who he was talking about.

Mourinho didn’t mention Torres by name but it doesn’t take a genius to work out who he was talking about.

With Samuel Eto’o out injured, the Special One named a side without strikers last night, instead selecting Andre Schurrle up top in front of attacking midfield trio Willian, Oscar and Eden Hazard.

Apart from Eden Hazard’s penalty, Chelsea didn’t create an awful lot of chances in the 3-1 defeat to PSG at the Parc des Princes, promoting questions afterwards about Mourinho’s team selection and the decision to leave Fernando Torres, the only recognised striker in the Chelsea squad, out of the starting line-up.

Although Torres was introduced as a second-half substitute, Mourinho did little to disguise his displeasure with his lack of options up front at the moment and, as we said, although Torres wasn’t mentioned by name by Mourinho, he had been named by the journalist asking the question and it was clear that the Spanish striker is not in the good books.

“I’m not happy with my strikers’ performances so I had to try things,” he said.

“And with Andre at least I know we have one more player to have the ball, one more player to associate with the other players, even though he’s not a striker.

“But football is not just about that. It’s also about scoring goals, getting behind, and that is for strikers. Real strikers.”

Guess those Torres to Inter Milan rumours might end up proving to be a lot more than rumours after all.
