Video: Four foot nine running back makes his first carry in a college football game

Small man, big heart.

Small man, big heart.

We can be very cynical about sport at times and make a huge deal about the smallest matters, but every now and again a heart-warming story comes along that puts everything into perspective.

One such story is that of Rice University Football team running back Jayson Carter, who made his first carry for the senior team during their victory over the University of Texas at the weekend.

Jayson was born with a genetic disorder that slows his growth but despite standing only four foot nine inches tall and weighing only 135 pounds (approximately nine and a half stone) he managed to gain a yard having been introduced late in the game while playing with and against some players who would be almost two foot taller and more than twice his weight.

Carter’s contribution was royally received by team-mates and opponents alike and his coach showered him with glowing praise afterwards.

“That young man is here every day busting his tail on the scout team,” Rice coach David Bailiff told the Houston Chronicle. “He deserves it.”

If that doesn’t put a smile on your face of a gloomy Monday, we don’t know what will.
