Video: Ice-hockey goalie makes unbelievable bicycle-kick save

No really, he does.

Conor Heneghan

No really, he does.

We can’t imagine it’s easy being an ice-hockey goalie. While all of their team-mates speed around the ice at ridiculous speeds, score some goals and pick some fights, they stand there wearing large amounts of padding doing their level best to get in the way of a puck that is often flying towards them at a ridiculous pace.

As a result, they often have to do something special to stand out from the crowd and Calgary Flames goalie Reto Berra managed to do just that with a remarkable save against the Columbus Blue Jackets last night.

When a shot heading towards goal went through a sea of bodies and looped up into the air towards the net, Berra, who was stranded a couple of yards away from the goal line, improvised and threw his skate towards it to bicycle-kick it away in spectacular fashion.

It’s already being called the save of the season in Canada although no doubt cynics will say that technically it wasn’t a bicycle kick because he shinned it.

What do you think Wayne?
