Making your international debut is a special moment for any footballer but it probably means even more for the Sassuolo defender…

While Irish football fans were busy marvelling at Anthony Pilkington’s deft finish and Robbie Brady’s brilliant free-kick against the USA last night one of the best footballing stories of the year was unfolding in Genoa .

Over the past two years, Francesco Acerbi has twice beaten testicular cancer and the 26 year old defender got to experience the proudest moment in his career so far as he donned the Azzuri colours for the very first time in his career last night.

Upon signing for his club, Acerbi was diagnosed with a testicular tumour but after undergoing extensive chemotherapy he is now a full fledged Italy international.

Take a look as he comes on for Leonardo Bonucci in the 82nd minute just before Italy take the lead against Albania thanks to a Stefano Okaka goal.
