One year on from his tragic early passing, TG4 will broadcast a documentary on the Kerry legend this Christmas. Here’s a sneak peek.

It is hard to believe it is already 12 months since we lost one of the GAA’s brightest stars. On December 15 last year, Páidí Ó Sé died in his native Ventry aged just 57 and the world of Gaelic Games was plunged into mourning.

Known throughout the country, not least in places like Westmeath and Clare where he also managed, it was in his native Kerry where his loss was most keenly felt.

As an Irish speaker, it is only natural that a documentary on his life will be broadcast on TG4 on Christmas Day. Called Rí an Pharóiste (King of the Parish) it is told from the local perspective of his rural Gaeltacht community in Ventry in West Kerry.

Put together by one of his neighbours, Louise Ní Fhiannachta, the documentary features recollections from Páidí’s wife Máire Uí Shé and their children Neasa, Siún & Pádraig Óg; childhood and lifelong friends Muiris Ó Fiannachta, Joe Bán Ó Sé & Seán Ó Catháin; brother Tom Ó Sé; nephew Feargal Ó Sé and close friends Mícheál Ó Sé & Peter Ó Fiannachta.

With lots of great personal footage and clips of him in action in green and gold, this taster has certainly whet our appetites.

It will be shown on TG4 at 10.15 on Christmas Day.
