It’s like he kicked the ball into a giant fan right in front of him…

It’s like he kicked the ball into a giant fan right in front of him…

We’re no stranger to playing sport in blustery conditions in Ireland; if you’re anything like your humble author you may have even seen a goalkeeper’s kick-out blow back into his own net on the GAA field.

That said, we don’t know have we ever seen winds nearly as strong as those that affected the Meads Cup Final between North Otago and Mid Canterbury earlier on this morning.

At one stage in the first half, North Otago’s Robbie Smith attempted a restart from the halfway line only to see the ball get caught up in incredibly strong winds which sent the ball flying over all of his teammates, past the posts and over the dead-ball line. Or, in the commentator’s local lingo, ‘et doesn’t go enywhere the tin metres, it’s gone did, over the did ball line behind the kucker’s back’.

Listen closely and you’ll hear the commentators speak of the need to keep the ball low just before Smith kicked the ball, but one of them also says that he’s never seen anything like it in 45 years watching rugby and no more than Ireland, New Zealand is no stranger to windy conditions.

Mad stuff, Ted.
